No-cook Overnight Refrigerator Oatmeal

Photo updated on 14 September 2018
This popular overnight, no-cook refrigerator oatmeal is a power pack nutrition and healthy breakfast which is really simple to make. It is made in individual glass bottles and serve cold. Well...you can actually use any container you can find at home, be it glass or plastic, best recycle!)

I have adapted and modified the recipe from The Yummy Life which has many flavor combinations. I used mixed fruits like blueberry, dragonfruit, mango and strawberry to make this overnight oatmeal. The combination of these four fruits compliment one another and I especially love the super sweet Thai honey mangoes and sweet Korean strawberries and top up with more before eating.

The original recipe uses the nutritional loaded Chia seeds. As I do not have it at home, I used Basil seeds instead, will get Chia seeds the next time to try out. Basil seed like the Chia seed is also a power seed with amazing benefits like aids in digestion, treats colds, cures respiratory disorders, good for skin infections and is a stress reliever.

My family had these healthy oatmeal for breakfast over the weekend. My boy who saw me preparing these bottles told me that he was not going to eat it as it looked 'yucky' to him. However, after coaxing him to try a teaspoon the next morning, he likes it so much that he ate half a bottle! My hubby who dislike oat porridge since young after trying a mouthful, finished the whole bottle and said he did not know that oat porridge can taste so nice prepared this way!

Hope you enjoy this oatmeal as much as we do. :)

No-cook Mixed Fruits Refrigerator Oatmeal

Ingredients: (makes one 300ml bottle)
40g Rolled Oats
110g Fresh Milk
90g Greek Yogurt (can replaced with plain or flavoured yogurt)
18g Honey (about 1 big tablespoon, reduced honey if using flavoured yogurt)
1.5 tsp Basil or Chia seeds
Diced Fruits (of your choice)

** If you find it too thick and prefer a watery texture, just reduce the yogurt and add more milk, adjust according to your preference.

Methods方法:
1. Add rolled oats, fresh milk, yogurt, basil or chia seeds and honey to bottle.

2. Put the lid on the bottle and shake to combine.

3. Add the diced fruits in and stir gently until combined.

4. Place in the refrigerator overnight and up to 2 days. During the overnight soak, the oats and basil/chia seeds absord the liquid and soften, giving a great texture when you eat it the next morning.

Update:
I have bought Chia Seeds and use it in my refrigerator oatmeal. The benefits of Chia Seed are plentiful and I highly recommend it to everyone!

Hi Baking TaiTai,

Can I know what is Greek Yogurt ? Can replace it with Plain Yogurt ?
TQ

Hi, Greek yogurt is a thicker and creamier type of yogurt and I love to used it to replace heavy whipping cream when making non-bake cheesecake. (as you can see in my non-bake cheesecake recipes). Yes, you can replaced with plain yogurt, but you have to adjust the amount accordingly, i.e. increase in the amount of plain yogurt and reduced the amount of fresh milk so that the oatmeal will not be too watery. Unless you prefer more watery texture. :)

where can buy greek yogurt, basic or chia seed?

Hi Karen, you can get the Greek style yogurt from supermarkets like Giant in Singapore or Malaysia, Cold Storage, Fairprice, Marketplace, etc. As for the Chia Seeds or Basil seeds, you may find them in some supermarkets where there is a health food section. You can also find them in Health supplement shops like GNC & Holland & Barrette. Or buy from online. The Chia seeds is expensive but has many many health benefits and can help slimming.

Hello , do we need to cook the rolled oat before we put into the jug?

Baking Taitai said...

Hi, you do not need to cook the rolled oat as the overnight soaking would have soften it.

Hi, may I know where can buy those bottles? Thx.

Hi, I got my bottles from the 'True Blue Pantry' at Peranakan Museum some time ago. Understand from friends that these sort of bottles can be purchased in bigger supermarkets like Giant or Fairprice Extra. You can also recycle bottles from Jams and Sauces to make this oatmeal porridge too. HTH! :)

Hi , may I ask , how much is the chia seed in sg ? Per kg or per gram ? Can I also get it in jb ?

Baking Taitai said...

Hi, (can't address you as you did not leave your name behind),
A pack of 500g chia seed costs about $36.40 in Singapore. My malaysian readers shared that they can get from health supplement stores or from Cosway.

how if I do this without put any chia seed & basil ?

Baking Taitai said...

Hi Huipung Huipeng, no problem to do without the chia seed and basil seed, it will not affect the overall taste, only thing is you won't get the nutrition and goodness from the power seeds.

Can I use linseed instead? And the quantity?

Baking Taitai said...

Hi yal, sure you can add anything you like even nuts. Have not tried linseed, amount up to you.
